Water...How Much Do We Really Need?
Water... How Much Do We Really Need?
We hear it all the time – you need 8 glasses of water a day. But is it actually true? While the exact amount you need has been debated, everyone agrees that hydration is super important! Why? Because the body is comprised mostly of water and every cell, tissue and organ in your body requires water to function.
There are few things more important to health and longevity than proper hydration. Drinking fluids is crucial to staying healthy and maintaining every system in your body including your heart, brain and muscles. Water serves a range of purposes in our bodies, including removing waste and flushing bacteria; controlling body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure; and maintaining a healthy metabolism. Did you know when you’re well hydrated, your heart doesn’t have to work as hard?
And yes – your skin too! As we age, our cells start to deteriorate and lose water in the process. This makes it much more difficult for our cells to work efficiently in fighting off free radicals (the #1 cause of aging!)
A lot of us drink water to suppress our appetite but hydration also aids in digestion, helping to eliminate toxins from our system, another cause of cellular aging. Ever feel bloated? Your body retains water when it’s dehydrated, the same way it will go into starvation mode when you severely cut calories. Our bodies are always working to achieve a balance when it comes to nutrition and hydration. Balance = healthy cells = a younger looking and feeling you.
Six to eight glasses a day is what we always hear but the exact amount of water you need varies by person and depends on several factors including the climate, your clothing, health conditions and even what you’re doing. An athlete will need more water because they lose a lot more water through sweating and breathing. (FYI - Glotrition founder Lisa Pineiro aims for 72 ounces of water a day, 20 of which she gets from our Super Beauty Elixir!)
Ok – so water is important – we get it. But I’m probably getting enough hydration in my normal diet, right? We do get hydration through other beverages and the food we eat (watery foods like soup, fruits and vegetables – did you know that an orange is 90% water?) but water is best! If you aren’t getting enough water, you’re in danger of becoming dehydrated.
Dehydration affects our bodies in so many ways from swollen feet or a headache to life-threatening illnesses like heat stroke. And thirst isn’t the best indication that you need to drink water – when you are thirsty, you’re already dehydrated! Here’s a great tip to remember - drink water before you exercise or go out into the sun – otherwise you’re just playing catch-up.
Now that you see all the benefits of proper hydration, why not make some of your water even more beneficial by adding Glotrition Super Beauty Elixir to your routine. It makes your water work harder for you by adding incredible anti-aging and immune boosting benefits.
